with as many helicopter crashes as I have seen and heard of, I'm really starting to doubt the safety of a good old fashion helicopter ride. No thanks.

When I was preventing North Vietnam from affecting an imminent invasion of California, this same thing happened on the fantail of my ship. Shit went everywhere adn the airdales were fishfeed. I sometimes wonder if any of you little halfbreed (gook/whitebread pukes) belong to me.

You ignorant bunch of lazy ass bitches!! Show some respect to those that died protecting your right to say what you want! BTW, for those that are curious, it looks like the "tail rotor" failed, causing the chopter to go into a spin.

"it looks like the "tail rotor" failed, causing the chopter to go into a spin." No it didn't, you slimey turd. It was pilot error, pure and titty-pink simple. And it wasn't a spin, spider nuts: it was a yaw.

The reason that happened wasn't pilot error. On the H-3 helocopter there is a drive shaft that runs from the main rotor to the tail rotor. because the tail of the helo can fold to allow for better storage aboard ship, there is a locking jaw with a bunch of teeth that connects the drive shaft once the tail has been closed. Those teeth were worn and due to very poor inspections it wasn't caught until it was too late. While in flight, the teeth became so worn the main drive shaft continued to spin and the tail drive shaft didn't stop, but wasn't turning with the main, causing the tail to spin. I know all of this because I was part of this squadron. HC-2 Desert Ducks out of Bahrain. Nobody died and there was one person who made sure of that. AM1 Matt Flowers was a crewman on that bird. From what I was told he was seriously hurt making sure the passengers got out ok.

  • desertduck02 December 27, 2006

yeah, no shit fuckhead!!! If you read above, some people thought it was pilot error and others had no idea what happened. Seeing as though I was part of that squadron and knew what happened, I decided to tell people exactly what happened. So blow me!!!

Anyone that has piloted a chopper knows that the aircraft reacts different once it's over the top of a solid surface vs. water which was also much lower than the deck of the carrier . The pilot must adjust the tail rotor just as the aircraft reaches that threshold or disaster can happen . The aircraft is moving as well as the carrier so it's not as simple as it looks . The pilot tried to recover the aircraft but the tail spin was too violent for him to do so . That bird was coming in way too straight with no problems mechanically until it was even with the carrier's deck for it not to be pilot error . The gears that desertduck02 mentioned sheared when the tail rotor connected with the decks surface .
