aussiedoc...The reason there’s no pads in rugby, is because, "the hit" is pretty much incidental to the game. In the NFL and NHL "the hit" pretty much is the game. If rugby players trained in the NFL, for awhile, then went back to their game...Well, somebody might die. Despite the padding, the injury rate is way higher in the NFL/NHL, than in rugby. Do the math!

Rugby is an intense sport. But if it included, a solid piece of rubber flying in excess of 100 miles per hour, and sharpened steel blades attached to thier feet. Im sure they would wear some protection.
