Pretty sure that the cops already knew he had a knife. Someone who lives there probably called in for a domestic and told them he had a knife. The guy didn't just wake up, he had the knife in the air before they even came in. I'm sure whoever called on him threatened to call the police and he probably said go ahead. Then the person probably told dude that the cops were coming. Which is probably why he held up in his room.
