The van was crooked on the hoist to begin with, then one of the lift arms broke right off.

    Scary.

  • me68 July 23, 2017

the lift arm rubber wasnt set properly so it slid out backwards slowly under pressure , that started the car tilting forward and it slid off, the lock out wasnt set on the arm and it almost appears it didnt have a drop lock on the lift either !!!!!

    • oldrooster July 23, 2017

@me68 I worked at a dealership, and it was common practice to rig that lock with bungie cords. No surprise they got fined when OSHA showed up

  • oldrooster July 23, 2017

He fucked up his lift points. Even looks like the cross member was in contact with the car.

Mechanics are trained to center a vehicles' center of mass over the lift arms before they lift up the vehicles?

I know those shitty lifts. There is a 2 inch diameter pin that holds the swinging arm to the lift. It goes down through the upper section of the swinging arm then through the arm of the hoist then through the bottom section of the swinging arm. Over time the large pin can work its way up and before you know it there isn't shit holding the arm to the hoist. The top of the pins should be tack welded to the arm so it cant work its way up. The pins have a lip on top to keep then from falling through the hole and it would be easy to weld to the arm.

    • happyjack July 24, 2017

@whobe that being said those pins have holes drilled through at the bottom for a heavy cotter pin to be inserted to prevent it from coming up. Not to mention the pin should be lubricated/protected with never seize. But most importantly a routine inspection by the mechanic would have seen the issue long before the pin came up high enough to cause failure.

      • whobe July 27, 2017

@happyjack The lifts I used 18 years ago didn't have a hole for a cotter pin and its the exact same lift in the video.
