zazu, your astute command of the obvious is astounding! your explanation of physics does not make these demos any less amazing though. It is like saying that the speed of the bullet is what makes it so destructive upon entering the human body. Well duh!! I bet that know-it-all attitude is a real hit with all your friends.

They're not necessarily good at fighting, but if one of those strikes hit you, yes it would break a bone. I usually only see this at "Karate" or Tae Kwon Do demonstrations, both of which are a joke when it comes down to real world application and fighting, in my humble opition. I never have done this stuff, but I am sure I can break a board, just because I know I can generate some power into my punches and kicks, with good technique. Zazu, if it's all physics, anyone with that knowledge of physics could do it. When is your video going to be posted here?

Ok, sorry for all of you that think this is cool here is the secret, when they do these things notice they use concrete, try this @ home, bake a brick in your oven take in back yard demolish with 1 finger, thus the trick to breaking bricks

If you have even a rudimentary knowledge of physics you'll know that what they are doing here is easy. Granted you need tough hands and feet but all of these things that they break are set up in such a way so they have no choice but to break.

An object can be very dense and it doesnt make much difference when you look at how its done. The things they are breaking are made of wood which has a grain which creates weak points. They are always thin flat boards too. Lets see them break a butcher's block with their hand.

As for the blocks and bricks, they all have a crystaline structure subject to fracture. They have a uniform density and can brak anywhere with enough force. Bricks are thick but even a brick has one side longer than the others. That becomes the weak side. Laying the brick flat on the ground and breaking it with your fist would be amazing because the force would be distributed so evenly across the entire surface that massive force would be required. But in these demonstrations you will invariably see some kind of small supports to the extreme ends of the brick. These accept the whole load of the brick. This makes the center a weak spot. Strike the center and the force is at first distributed out to the ends and finding resistance returns to the center and snap, the brick breaks. You will never see anybody punch the brick on its end to break it length wise.

To further amaze their easily amazed audience, these kung fu masters, usually white guys with creatively trimmed facial hair, will stack a dozen of these so arranged bricks, as if that would make it harder to do. On the contrairy, once you have broken the top brick the force will inrease with the load of the bricks you break on the way down. It is martial slight of hand. As I said it takes tough hands and feet and some strength but being amazed at this is like standing in awe of a sheep that can clear a fence. Yawn.
