Slaying the beast

I'm glad I don't live anywhere near where they found that snake. Unless the guy in the picture just happens to be a midget that snake is fucking huge. Which reminds me I gotta get me some steel toed boots.

I used to catch rattlers, for the bounty, but I never saw one that huge. And I've caught hundreds.

That is an Eastern Diamondback and this picture has been under scrutiny, not because they don't get that large { they can reach upwards of 8ft} but because to make the snake larger, it is much closer to the camera and the man in the photo is actually a small guy. Real or not, that is enough snake to kill you and the larger ones hit with enough force to break a leg. The EDB is the worlds heaviest venomous snake.

A shame to have killed it. I could have used it to keep the cat population in check.

Zedex, good info but thank God very few deaths reported. This is from the NC Museum of Science:

"Although the eastern coral snake possesses very powerful venom, it is rare in the state and no bites have been recorded. The eastern diamondback rattlesnake has a large quantity of venom that is more toxic than that of the timber rattlesnake, pigmy rattlesnake, cottonmouth or copperhead. However, it, too, is quite rare. The copperhead can be considered the most dangerous in North Carolina simply because in many areas of the state, it is the only venomous snake you are likely to encounter. The copperhead is more likely to occur near human dwellings than other venomous species, and it is responsible for the vast majority of venomous snakebites." I've killed my share of copperheads, the biggest was a pregnant momma full of babies. She measured 31". Took her to a vet to confirm 'cause I'd never seen one that fucking big.

allenf1, come further south and you'll see copperheads a lot bigger. and rattlesnakes are quite prevalent. i've killed as many as 8 in one year, four of them in my yard from 3 to 6ft. none as big as this one. this snake was killed in texas. allegedly 9'1" weighing 97lbs. i got an email and the picture in it is a little bigger and seems legit. the biggest i've seen in my area was about 7 ft. more often 3 to 5 ft. plenty big enough to make me need clean drawers when i get home.

I used to hunt near Freer Tx. where they have an anual "Rattlesnake Round-Up" and have seen HUGE fucking Diamondbacks and this one is no exception even if this guy is a midget ! The smaller Rattlesnakes are actualy more dangerous in most snake bites because they empty ALL of thier built up venom as where the older and larger ones have learned to actually save thier venom and inject less of it for more kills and this information comes from experts in venomous snake research and not something I just pulled out of my ass ! And I know from experience that "Cottonmouths" are some mean and agressive motherfuckers that will chase your ass and catch up with your Johnboat with a little piss ant 15 Evinrude trying to get away from a nest of them . They ball up in a huge nest in the water while breeding and you are pretty much fucked if you are in the water close by unless you carry a shotgun in the boat like we were lucky enough to have along with a little survival .22 . I thought we were going to run out of fucking ammo at all the fuckers chasing our asses . Yep , running Trout-lines on the Brazos River used to be pretty fun in my teens after you clean the shit out of your pants ! LOL

And just remember that these big fuckers can strike out about 1 1/2 times thier length ! That fucker could tag your ass from 13 feet away if he saw you coming and had time to cock his body in a strike position which is pretty fast . Here is another lesson in venomous snake technology that most don't know . You can actually take a "stun-gun" and apply the electricity directly on a venomous bite and it changes the venom's molecular structure and renders it non lethal if applied right away . I had an older guy tell me this at a gun show in Austin about 2 months ago and I thought he was full of shit until I talked to a Paramedic that told me it's a fact and they use the Fibulator Paddles and set it to a lower voltage and do it on snake bite victims . Guess the dude wasn't full of shit afterall ?

Carnut, i have lived in the south all my life and i can attest to what you say. but i didn't know about the stun gun on a snake bite. I'll add a little to the rattlesnake thing: another reason smaller ones are more dangerous is the big ones are lethargic and a lot slower than the smaller ones.
