Strumming Away

on 07.19.2014

Any guitar players out there? I'm sure we've got quite a few musicians that hang out at the site. I know chupamiverga can play the fuck out of a skin flute. Anyway, I got a guitar a while back and have been teaching myself to play. Unfortunately I'm not as consistent at practicing as I'd like to be, so I pretty much suck, but I still have fun when I do fuck around with it. Anybody got some good tips on how to learn this fucker with some kind of strategic method? I've just been watching youtube videos to learn shit. I've considered getting a few lessons, which would probably be worth it, but that's money I could also spend on beer and lube. I know the 8 basic open chords and some parts of a few different songs I like. Sometimes I strum pretty well, and sometimes I feel like I'm performing at a "special" talent show. Anybody got any tips? Besides practice more? I already know that one. While I'm on the topic, somebody should sing a quick little song about crazyshit and send us the video. That would be awesome. --Adam

I'm primarily a drummer. I started out on bass, and during the interim I figured out how to play guitar. AllI really did was just put on records of my favorite bands or groups and learned how to play those songs whether they were right or wrong. I can't help it. I've got an ear for music. I can pick things out.. I'll just listen to it once and then I can just pick it out on the guitar. But don't give me any hip-hop. That's not really music at all... just a loop over and over and over and over and over again. There's no chorus, there's no bridge, there's barely anything! the whole song is a verse! As a bass player I learned everything from Geddy Lee and geezer Butler. As a drummer I learned everything I know from Neil Peart, Gene Hoglan, and Danny Heifetz... Not to mention Bill Ward, Ginger Baker, Mark Bolan, Stewart Copeland, Lemmy kilmister, Mikkey Dee, Michael Denner, Trent Ruane... Andy LaRoque, Chuck Schudniner, Oystien Aarseth, and the Brazilian drummer known only as D crazy.

Adam, as a guitar teacher myself, if you want to spend money on lessons do that right now. There’s never a more important time than when you start to have someone tell you how to position and strengthen hands. A good teacher will tell you how to avoid stupid vices in the beginning, as opposed to ironing them out later on, a real bitch if you want to get into some advanced stuff. After you learn positioning and some scales/chords you can check out some tabs and youtube videos for actual music. Hope that helps. -PS if you want to save on lube, just use some spit

Get a digital tuner. If you're teaching yourself grab some books that come with cds. I took lessons for years so it's best to play with others then play with yourself . ( no pun intended)

I have played for years, and am self-taught. About a year ago I signed up for JamPlay and it is worth the $19.95 a month. Available 24 hours, and you get songs and instruction in any type of playing you want. You can check it out for free.

..Advises?? Have fun. Play. Just play and enjoy your own noise. Learn to let your guitar sing on it’s own.. It sound weird but it’s the guitar who has the last word on what is gnarling out the amp’.. And the most important advise I can think of is...to have fun. Lots of it. That’s why it’s called "playing" guitar.
