The Right Tool

on 01.10.2011

Today is one of those days where you have to learn the hard way about having the right tool. Yesterday morning I undertook the process of changing my pitman arm in my truck. Well, I figured it would only take about 35-45 minutes to take off, another 45 to put on, and bam! Done. Nope, didn't have the right pully, so I spent a bit of yesterday. Went to a family function, then most of this morning getting the right tool. Once I found that, I got that sucker off in 5 minutes. Now I have to get it back on, and I'm done. What fun! Ohh well, it's fun being a yard mechanic for a day. --Jay

I've done an Idler arm on my HQ Monaro when I was 18yrs old, I'm sure I ended up punching a hole in the lounge room wall that night, you will need to spread that new pitman arm a little for the splines to fit over the steer shaft, but the old gas axe to warm it up and expand the pitman first usually works, and don't be bashing it too hard the steer box seals will get damaged from memory?, have fun and next time pay someone the bucks to do it like I didn't.
