it's a tibetan traditional sky burial. the ground is too rocky for burial, and due to the scarcity of fuel/firewood, cremation is typically limited to lamas and other dignitaries.
tibetans teach the transmigration of spirits and believe the bodies of the dead to be merely empty vessels with no need for preservation. they are left for vultures and other scavengers, or to simply decay and return to the earth.
there....that's something you know now.
